Founded on March 5, 1866, Hammonton is governed under the town form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a mayor and a town council, with all positions elected at large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. The mayor is elected to a four-year term. The town council consists of six members elected to serve two-year terms on a staggered basis, with three seats coming up for election each year.
The mayor of Hammonton is Independent Steve DiDonato (I, 2021). Members of the Hammonton Town Council are Deputy Mayor Tom Gribbin (I, 2019), Steve Furgione (R, 2020), Joseph Giralo (R, 2019), Sam Rodio (I, 2020), Brooke Sacco (I, 2019) and Michael E. Torrissi Jr. (R, 2020).
